I'm concerned because they don't get recess and don't have a gym. I feel that children from five years and up need a place to wear off some energy. The gym is only used as a cafeteria.

In Kindergarten the students have three recesses each day, and this continues through the elementary and middle school. There is a cafeteria that doubles as gym for taekwondo and building a gym is part of the school's plan. The school also hired an Athletic Director who has actively expanded the athletic opportunities for the upper grades. That being said, the school's focus is on academics. They have significantly higher MCA scores than the Osseo school district. A huge amount of energy is spent in K-3 on making sure that the young kids can read proficiently. The school has apparently recognized that if the kid's are struggling with reading early on, it becomes very difficult for them to handle the curriculum later, which is focused on the Great Books of Western Civilization. After 3rd grade there is no more formal phonics instruction (so no readers), by 4th grade they are instead they are reading, writing and discussing books. All 4th grade students read, Pinocchio, Pollyanna, Peter Pan, The Secret Garden, Tales of Sherlock Holmes, Treasure Island, The Little Prince, and Wind in the Willows; not abridged/redacted versions for kids -- the real texts. The pace is fast and the expectations are high. Math is Saxon Math. There is also daily instruction in grammar, history, science, spanish, and latin. Parnassus is almost too good to be true for families who are looking for a rigorous program and are willing to support their kids.

If you are thinking about education only, then this is great school for you. if you want your kids to explore different things then this is the not the school for you. also they very poor at taking care of special need students. they dont have enough teacher hired. in one point i feel like they dont know what to do with special need kids. some special needs are very talented academically so when they see this kids are doing well in study then they tend to forget he / she need to focus other things. i would not recommend this school to a parents who has special need kids.
